THE SEKEM INITIATIVE
In 2025 SEKEM won the UNEP Climate Champions award.
SEKEM is a long-standing Egyptian social and sustainable development initiative founded in 1977 by Dr. Ibrahim Abouleish to realize a holistic vision of human, societal, and environmental development. It began on barren desert land northeast of Cairo and has since grown into a multifaceted model that integrates ecology, economy, culture, and social life. SEKEM uses biodynamic and organic agricultural methods to regenerate desert land and build thriving farms, supports education, health, and cultural programs, and creates ethical, environmentally responsible businesses that produce organic food, textiles, and remedies. The initiative also works closely with thousands of contracted farmers across Egypt, promotes fair and sustainable livelihoods, and advocates for regenerative practices that address climate, food security, and community empowerment.
